“We’re working hard to understand exactly what happened and why,” said a Birmingham Police spokesman of the incident outside Tunnel Club.
A 22-year-old man has been taken into custody by the West Midlands Police on suspicion of attempted murder after he rammed a vehicle into several people outside Tunnel Club in Birmingham, UK early Friday morning.
According to BBC, the incident occurred just after 3am, when an It’s Freshers student event wrapped up. Police say the man “deliberately” drove into the crowd and injured six people, five of whom were hospitalized, one with multiple injuries. As of Saturday, two still remained in the hospital in stable condition.
Police arrested the driver of the vehicle around 9am on Saturday for questioning. In addition to the attempted murder suspect, another man who was detained on suspicion of disturbing the peace is now currently in the hospital.
“We’re working hard to understand exactly what happened and why,” said Detective Chief Inspector Dave Sproson from Birmingham Police in a statement. “At this stage, we believe this to have been an isolated and deliberate attack linked to an earlier incident inside the nightclub.”
Tunnel Club has been situated in one of the archways beneath the railway line on Birmingham’s Livery Street since the early 2000s. Prior to that, the space was home to nightclubs like Subway City and The Jug. For three decades, the venue has hosted a techno night called House of God that especially provided a platform for Birmingham DJ and producer Surgeon.
Local police are appealing the public to come forward with any additional information about the incident on Friday morning. “The investigation continues to make good progress, but we’d still appeal for anyone with information or mobile phone images to get in touch via our dedicated website,” said Sproson.
